This is probably for the best, since Russell is definitely of the I don't really care much about the original story school of adaptation.
You might remember his conception of the Drake family—it caused a bit of an uproar earlier this year:
...a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities. If you’re the head of a museum, or head of state, you’ve got to deal with them, and they’re badass. They’re like the Sopranos in some ways, but they have great taste, and they have a sense of justice.Then again, Russell has directed some good films, so who knows what might have been. It might have been a good film, but it probably wouldn't have actually been an adaptation.
